SP is a social enterprise and collective, founded in Sheffield, using fermentation (and other food preservation methods) to bring people together and share knowledge which connects us to each other’s cultures and stories.
Often using farm surplus - which connects us to our local food systems building resilience, reducing pre-farm gate waste and adding alternative revenue streams and ideas for farmers and communities.
We compliment this with knowledge of and active participation with foragaging for ingredients and share knowledge around wild food - which connects us to the seasons and local landscape.
Social Pickle uses food as a lens for critiquing and something, public health responses, national and global food systems and land access.

Economy
Social Pickle was founded with strong philosphical principles around economy, care, and connection. Early on we took part in a workshop led by Katrin Bohm who guided us through a workshop rethinking traditional market economics and lifting the veil on capitalism. The Iceberg theory from xxxxxxxx shows the hidden market factors that influence and essentially produce value but are not payed in the same way.
Our collective was formed out of the kitchen of FOODHALL a community canteen in central Sheffield. FH was also developing the National Food Service. The team bonded over their shared bacteria experiments and we quickly realised that we were unable to even make a dent in some of the surplus food that was coming through the kitchen.
Fermenting, and preserving these ingredients was a further way to extend the nutritional value and shelf life of the produce. Whilst also engaging in traditional techniques that have shaped cultures over thousands of years.
Social Pickle is collective fermentation project. Working around access, health, care and waste.
